Hair transplant: The right hair density

Hair loss is a big part of the modern day cosmetic concerns.

One of the solutions to this problem is hair transplant, but many people sometimes miss that hair transplant surgery is not just about planting hair, it's about creating the right hair density.

The importance of hair density

In hair transplant, density refers to the number of transplanted hairs per unit area.

Too low a density can result in a sparse look, while too high a density can result in an unnatural look or poor engraftment.

It is therefore important to establish the right density, taking into account the individual's hair loss progression and harmony with existing hair.

What is the right hair density?

In general, the density of normal hair is approximately 80 to 100 hairs per square centimeter.

However, in hair transplant, it is common to maintain a density of 40 to 50 hairs per square centimeter to blend in with existing hair.

In particular, the appropriate density can vary depending on whether the transplant site is on the crown or forehead line.

1. Hairline (forehead) transplant :

The hairline is an important factor in defining the shape of the face, so it requires a natural density.

For the frontal hairline, which has a low density, it is common to plant 40 to 50 hairs per square centimeter, gradually increasing the density in layers.

Higher density areas are planted with an average of 50 to 70 grafts per square centimeter. At this density level, results often mimic 65 to 75% of natural hair density, and the difference between natural and transplanted hair is undetectable.

2. crown transplant :

The crown area is characterized by the fact that the original hair is visible in the light, so a balanced distribution must be considered while increasing density.

On average, the crown can be transplanted with 50 to 80 grafts per square centimeter, and the direction of the existing hair should be considered so that the grafts grow in the same direction.

Relationship between hair engraftment and density

One of the most important factors in hair transplant is the engraftment rate.

No matter how many hairs are planted, if they are not engrafted, they will yield poor outcome.

Generally, the engraftment rate of transplanted hair remains around 85-90%, but depending on the skill of the surgeon, you can expect to see engraftment rates of 92% or higher.

It is important to note that it is not possible to achieve the same density as normal through hair transplant by transplanting at a high density.

Attempting to transplant beyond this density is beyond the limits of what can be physically transplanted into each hair during the hair transplant surgery, and excessive density can lead to poor blood supply between the hair follicles, which can lead to poor engraftment.

Therefore, it is necessary to maintain an appropriate density by considering the engraftment rate rather than just planting a large amount of hair.

Considerations for Hair Transplant Success

1. Personalized planning :

Your density should be tailored to your individual needs, taking into account your hair loss progression and existing hair distribution.

2. Natural Design :

The density of the hairline and crown should be designed to blend in naturally so that the transplant is not obvious.

3. Thorough consultation :

It is important to consult with an experienced surgeon to determine the right density for your scalp condition.

Hair transplantation is not just about planting hair; it's about creating a natural look that blends in with your existing hair.

Therefore, properly adjusting the density and taking into consideration the grafting rate is essential for a successful outcome.

By finding the right density for you, you can expect a more natural and satisfying result.
